Richard Neutra Architectural Plans Available For First Time

See on Scoop.iton design

Scrapbook‘s insight:

I have mixed feelings about the news published last week in regard to the availability of Richard Neutra’s architectural plans.

On the one hand, making elegant/ sophisticated designs available to more people could make them realize that, when it comes to the biggest expense in your lifetime, you don’t always have to compromise, and that there is such a thing as considered, good design.

This initiative, with built examples to make a case for the designs, may just be the catalyst, the motivation, that the average person has been missing in order to demand higher space and quality standards, and as a result, they may also begin to demand for the built environment as a whole to improve.

On the other hand, the devil is in the detail and the world has changed becoming more aware of issues such as sustainability, lifetime flexibility and accessibility.

As a result, the slim/ elegant details that once made Neutra’s spaces what we have known them to be, are in danger of getting butchered during the construction process, generating a new breed of decontexturalized mutants instead.
